Each of these monarch butterflies has just completed an extraordinary feat for the first and last time.

Every autumn, millions of monarchs migrate thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to the mountains of Mexico. Their instincts tell them where to go – these butterflies have never been here before, and won’t live long enough to come back.

But with their forest habitats shrinking and their protectors facing violence, can they keep surviving the migration?

The oyamel fir trees where the butterflies roost are under threat from illegal logging and climate disruption. The area has been made into a special butterfly reserve, which thousands of tourists visit every year.

Photo 3: Pablo Angeles Hernández is a forest engineer at the butterfly reserve. When the weather is too hot and stormy, the fir trees become parched and vulnerable to parasites. Experiments are underway to breed the trees to be more resilient, and even to move existing trees uphill, where they are less vulnerable to rising temperatures.

Photo 7: Geneticist Cuauhtemoc Saenz Romero has been growing fir trees higher up in the hills, to find those that cope best with the change, and crossbreed them. In this way, he hopes to make sure the butterflies continue to have a safe place to ride out the winter.

When legendary musician, artist and producer Brian Eno was invited to deliver this year’s Grantham Annual Lecture at Imperial College London, he focused on emotional interconnectedness and the role art can play in spurring climate action. "We all know the information. Information isn’t changing our mind. It's feelings." Artists make things to give you feelings, he explained.

The man behind 1975’s album classic 'Another Green World' also talked about how the climate movement is silently growing without us even noticing it.

“Revolutions happens in two phases”, he went on to say, quoting a Russian historian, “The first is when everyone realises that something is wrong. The second is when everyone realises that everyone else realises it as well. This is the point we're reaching now."

What better way to end the year than with a historic pact to preserve biodiversity?

As part of the new deal, 190 countries have agreed to protect 30% of the planet’s land and seas by 2030.

The deal was sealed at COP 15 – the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal – which has just drawn to an end after two weeks of intense negotiations.

Though not legally binding, the result is being seen as a landmark win for life on Earth. It’s now up to each nation to deliver on the promise.

Why is this deal so important?

In the midst of a sixth mass extinction, we’re currently losing animals and plants 1,000 times faster than natural rates. And unlike previous mass extinction events, this one is driven by human activity.

Animals and plants create the conditions required for life on Earth and so by protecting biodiversity, we protect our future.

The 30% goal is designed as a coordinated effort to counteract more irreversible loss to our ecosystems. However, it remains less than the percentage legendary biologist E. O. Wilson originally envisaged. The ‘father of biodiversity’ spent the latter years of his life promoting The Half-Earth Project, which aimed to reserve 50% of the world for wild nature.

Today, only about 17% of land and 8% of oceans are protected globally. Even a country like Denmark – often heralded as a frontrunner in the green transition – only has 2% of its total land reserved for nature.

The deal just about doubles overall biodiversity financing to $200 billion per year, and at least $30 billion is destined to go from high-income nations in the Global North to support biodiversity in the Global South.

Few environmentalists speak with greater authority than Wanjira Mathai. As the Regional Director for Africa at the @worldresources, she has a masterful overview of the dynamics of eco-development on a continental scale.

The Kenyan biologist is the daughter of the legendary activist Wangari Maathai who became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize when receiving the award for her lifelong commitment to democracy and women’s rights in 2004.

Don’t panic! Yes, giant insects have taken over Paris. But there’s no need to bow down to our new insect overlords quite yet. It’s just a crazy new light show at the city’s botanical gardens.

The idea is to open people’s eyes to the huge role played by tiny little creatures that we sometimes can’t even see.

Meet Brad Vanstone, the cheese-loving grandson of a UK dairy farmer, who went vegan for the planet, but couldn’t find a tasty plant-based cheese. So he made his own. 

It’s the latest episode (link in bio) in our video series zooming in on ‘The Moment’ we decide to step up and shape a more sustainable future in whatever way we can.

“People are happy to make alternative decisions in their diet,” says Brad Vanstone, as long as they taste good. 

He’s speaking from experience. Such is his love of cheese that he has a tattoo of it on his arm. And while he found it easy to give up meat and dairy, cheese was a challenge. He just couldn’t find any vegan alternatives that he liked. But where some people would stop there, Brad was just getting started.

Lucy, a 5 community member shared this video with us and we were so surprised by the sounds that a butterfly could make. It made us reflect and notice the little things around us in nature.

“I was cleaning in my barn and suddenly heard this really clear sound I had never really heard before. I couldn’t figure out what it was. I was mystified and went searching for the sound. Suddenly I saw the butterfly and it was almost like seeing a butterfly for the very first time. Seeing it as a little curious kid. I couldn’t connect the sound with the butterfly - because what sounds does a butterfly make when you see it in the summertime? I watched the butterfly for a long time, simply flapping its wings like this. Just taking in that little precious moment.”

Powerful stuff here from Philippine climate activist @mitzijonelle. She had so many great things to say when we met up with her at COP27 that we’re sharing her words in five mini-videos. He’s only 16, but Belgian climate activist @benjaminvbr has already lost his close friend Rosa due to climate change. He was literally unable to hold on to her as she was swept away by lethal flash floods last summer. It has made him all the more determined to make sure no more lives are lost. He was at COP27 to share his story and work with activists from all over the world. Because as he says, “It’s a global problem”.

Having made her motion picture debut in Harmony Korine and Larry Clark’s indie classic Kids, @rosariodawson is no stranger to the harsh realities of life.

Though she’s soared through the industry ever since - culminating with her titular role in next year’s Star Wars series, Ahsoka - she’s never lost touch with the bigger picture.

Last week marked Carl Sagan’s birthday.

To celebrate, we thought we would pay homage to his 1985 address to the US Congress about climate change. He likened the changing climate to become comparable to Venus’ greenhouse atmosphere.

"[Venus is] the nearest planet — a planet of about the same mass, radius, density, as the Earth, [but it has a] surface temperature about 470 degrees centigrade, 900 Fahrenheit.” The reason? “A massive greenhouse effect in which carbon dioxide plays the major role.”

Even in 1985, scientists could see the effects of a changing climate and Carl Sagan was at the forefront.

Lastly, we will leave you with an excerpt from the ever-important Pale Blue Dot:

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.”

No Music on a Dead Planet

This is the message from @musicdeclares that @billieeilish performs with. As a true Gen Z iconoclast, Eilish has been fighting for social justice and has added the future of our planet and climate justice to her fight.

Eilish's Happier Than Ever tour might be one of the greenest world tours in music history. The efforts to use her platform and massive audience to change perspectives are extremely promising. Working with @reverb_org, Eilish's world tour offers plant-based foods, eliminates disposable waste, and works to offset emissions.

Plant-based alternatives are priced the same as their meat counterparts, introducing a worldwide audience to these options. The carbon offsets will focus on projects in frontline and BIPOC communities that are most affected by climate change.

When does someone become a changemaker? Why organic garden plants? “What not many people know is that many plants sold at garden centres are laced with pesticides – even those labelled ‘pollinator-friendly’. So instead of boosting soil biodiversity and helping bees, butterflies and other insects, you’re actually harming the very ecosystem you want to help,” Suzanne explains.

That's the message for the world's richest, most CO2-emitting countries at this year's COP27 climate conference. Poorer countries, which are most at risk from harm due to climate change, are pushing for developed nations, which did most of the polluting, to pay compensation. It's a thorny topic.

Last week, we, along with @miniature_cph, hosted a workshop for kids and parents to learn about bees at @trompenburg in Rotterdam.

Children had the chance to learn how beehives form and the importance of bees. The kids also made bee hotels to take home and help create more spaces for wild bees to nest

The arboretum did a beautiful job of setting up a lovely space for the guests and having great guides who inspired the children. MINI A TURE sent hats for all the gift bags, and the arboretum added a “treasure hunt” of leaves and nuts for children to stay and explore after the official event.

Make those lazy Sundays even lazier - let nature do its thing!

Two weeks ago, we had the most talented intern, Edvin Rinnan, from 9th grade, help us out for a week with our illustrations. Edvin also taught us about the different autumn leaves from around the world.

This led us to look further into the benefits of leaf litter, and we were quickly reminded of the intricate process of nature and ecosystems alike.
